Maybe you’ve been asked for your transcripts and diplomas to study abroad, for a civil service exam or to apply for a grant. Or maybe you need a translated birth certificate to get married, or a criminal record check to work in another country. Whichever situation you’re in, you’ve come to the right place.

You’ve made it this far, so perhaps you already know what a sworn translation is. If not, no problem. In Spain, it’s an official translation drafted by a translator who has been recognised by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Sworn translations bear the translator’s seal and signature, as well as a formal attestation that certifies its accuracy.

You can now choose between two sworn translation formats:

Sworn translation in hard copy

The traditional format for sworn translations. A paper copy of the stamped, signed sworn translation is delivered together with a copy of the original, which has also been stamped, dated and signed. This format entails more manual steps, including delivery by post.

Sworn translation in digital format

A digital document bearing the sworn translator’s electronic signature. This format is primarily valid for remote procedures, but may also be accepted if printed out. A digitally signed sworn translation must fulfil the same requirements as its paper counterpart, but it doesn’t have to be printed.

Recommendations

It’s always best to check which formal requirements your sworn translation must meet. Ask the institution requesting the translation. They will be the one to decide whether your translation is valid for their purposes. That decision is outside the scope of the sworn translator’s powers.

The accuracy and precision of sworn translations are certified so they can stand up in court or be processed in a government office. After all, the sworn translator is legally responsible for their work. Along with fulfilling legal requirements, a sworn translation is an extra quality guarantee.
